Senior Advocate of Nigeria

Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) is a title that may be assigned to legal practitioners in Nigeria with at least ten years’ standing experience and who have distinguished themselves in the legal profession. A Senior Advocate of Nigeria is said to have been admitted to the “Inner Bar” as made distinct from the “Outer” or “Utter” Bar, which is made up of the junior advocates.


On Friday 13th of November, 72 legal practitioners were appointed Senior AdvocaSenior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) te of Nigeria (SAN) and were sworn in on Monday 14th of December 2020. The rank is awarded to senior lawyers who have demonstrated great excellence and have proved themselves as advocates and academicians. A total of 137 lawyers were shortlisted – 116 advocate applicants and 21 academic applicants – but only 72 were successful; 62 advocate applicants and 10 academic applicants.
